EQ Basics: Understanding Gain vs. Volume

CONCEPT-
Gain and volume are two different things, but the terms are often used interchangeably. This can lead to a lot of confusion, especially if you’ve ever found yourself with a volume fader maxed out while still getting only a tiny super quiet signal from your mic.

This EQ lesson explains the relationship between gain and volume, walks you through how to diagnose issues and how to handle mixing your show to an appropriate level (-16 LUFS). We'll also dive into a bit of 32 bit float audio which has become an incredibly helpful audio tool in recent years.

ACTION ITEMS-
•Do you know how to set the gain on volume levels on your specific setup? This includes the microphone itself, a mixer/interface, and software.

•What’s the best input gain level for your microphone? Experiment and find out! Then keep it there and adjust its level in your final mix using a volume fader on that mic’s channel or in a software application.
